Bruce Sussman says weather's in his genes because he comes from a long line of meteorologists.
When he was a boy, he would race home from school on stormy days to see what the weather had done: was there flooding, mudslides, roads closed?
He’s still amazed by the power of storms and he’s reported live from Mt. Hood blizzards, central Oregon and Washington wildfires. He’s also done flake by flake coverage of NW snow storms and the flooding that seems to follow. The flooding live shot he remembers most was on a closed Highway 217 during 1996. As he walked during his live report, the water got deeper and deeper. Suddenly, ice cold water poured over the top of and then into his boots and sent a chill up his spine. He’s still not sure what he said during the rest of the live report. Hopefully, it made sense!
Bruce has been Chief Meteorologist at Koin Local 6 since spring of 2006. Prior to that, he was talking about Portland weather at another Portland station for more than a decade. Prior to that, he was at the NBC station in Spokane, Washington and the ABC station in Yakima Washington. His first on-air work was at the NBC station at the University of Missouri, Columbia, Bruce’s alma mater.
Bruce has finished the Portland Marathon but doubts he’ll do that again, because the race nearly finished him! He has also earned the Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society and he’s won back to back Emmy’s for Best Weather Anchor in the Northwest.
But the two accomplishments he’s most proud of are his kids. He and his wonderful wife have two pre-school aged boys. So needless to say, there’s not a lot of sleep at the Sussman household these days. There is, however, a lot of Lego building and talk about Star Wars.
