Thirty inches of snow buried the Northeast in the Blizzard of 1996, and from that point on, Christine Ferreira was determined to become a meteorologist!
Christine was born in Wilmington, Delaware and raised in Southeastern Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. Snowstorms (and the corresponding days off from school) are some of her favorite childhood memories.
Christine attended Millersville University of Pennsylvania and earned her bachelor's degree in meteorology. During her time at MU, she helped to develop the first streaming video forecasts of any meteorology program in the U.S. She also participated in undergraduate research on wintertime air quality.
From snowy and cold to hot and humid, Christine headed to Victoria, Texas where she was the evening meteorologist at KAVU-TV. In September 2005, Category 5 Hurricane Rita was aimed at Victoria, less than three days from landfall. Christine guided the station and its viewers from mandatory evacuations to landfall along the Texas/Louisiana border. "It was a close call," Christine said, "but well worth the evacuation efforts in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster."
Christine blew in to the Northwest in January, 2007. Catch her forecasts on KOIN Local 6 Early and KOIN Local 6 at Noon. If you’re a country music fan, be sure to listen for Christine's Skywatch Weather updates on 98.7 KUPL with Lee and Alana in the mornings!
Christine is a weekly volunteer for the Oregon Humane Society, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwest. She also participates in KOIN-TV’s Adopt-A-Class program, and frequently speaks at local grade schools. If you want Christine to speak at your school, please email her at cferreira@koin.com.
Christine is a member of the National Weather Association, the American Meteorological Society, and the Oregon Chapter of the American Meteorological Society.
