Portland fire crews respond to an overnight fire in Southwest Portland. They say the first call came in at 1:48am as a chimney fire, that quickly spread to the roof of the home on SW 51st & SW Coronado. Fire fighters were on scene within minutes and say they arrived to find heavy flames shooting from the roof of the home. They tell KOIN Local 6 that they were concerned the fire would spread to the next door neighbor, so they started fighting this from the top. The fire was a tough one, one of the heaviest they have seen so far this year. A family of four got out safely. The Red Cross has been called to assist them. Fire officials say this is a good reminder to all of us who live in homes with a chimney--get a chimney sweep. You can call a certified contractor from the yellow pages to come make sure your chimney is clean. No word on the cost of damage, but fire fighters say there is extensive damage to the roof of the home and a lot of water damage throughout the house.
