PORTLAND - City and county leaders say the Portland area has more people who are homeless per capita, than anywhere else in the country.
It's a problem that needs a solution, especially as the winter weather gets colder.
That's why both are teaming up to provide 400 additional beds for homeless families this year.
Danielle McCallister and her two young daughters arrived in Portland last winter with nowhere to go.
Since she has children, she says she was turned away from several shelters.
Then someone told her about the Human Solutions' Homeless Warming Center.
"It was really looking really real to me that I was going to be sleeping on the streets. It was 30 degrees. I had two children with no jackets, but they welcomed us."
Now, McCallister is living on her own in an apartment, but she still advocates for others with whom she can relate.
Human Solutions' Homeless Family Warming Center located at 1435 NE 81st Street and is open from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM daily.
The shelter is in desperate need of donations of food, blankets, pillows, and other bedding supplies.
