In hot summer months some households put nearly half their water on the lawn. Over-watering is a common mistake that wastes precious water, money, time and effort. It also encourages shallow root growth, promotes weeds, and washes essential nutrients from the soil.

To do it right:
• Water lawns one inch or less per week.
• Set an empty can under the sprinkler and time how long it takes to fill one inch; that’s how long you’ll need to water each time.
• Water early in the morning/night to avoid evaporation and sunburned leaves. Reduce the size of or eliminate your lawn and plant native plants.
