What about wedges?

Most golfers carry at least two wedges, and many like to have others on hand for special situations. The sand wedge is essential for getting out of bunkers. It has a bump on the bottom called the 'bounce,' which enabled your club head to slide across the sand to get under the ball. The pitching wedge is another indispensable club for your bag. For the average male golfer, it will drive the ball an average of 110 yards, filling the gap between 120 for a nine-iron and 90 for a sand wedge. Women can expect to hit each club about 20 yards less. For even shorter shots, there's the lob wedge. This will loft the ball nearly vertically, for an average distance of 65 yards. It's also handy for getting the ball over trees and other large obstacles. Despite the vastness of most golf courses, most shots will be made within 100 yards of the pin. Your choice of appropriate wedges can give you the flexibility you need to master the short game.
