A Portland business owner says one of the most popular consumer review websites is hurting his business.

Rod Dudley owns Angelic Healing Hands massage therapy centers, located in Beaverton and downtown Portland.

He said someone is posting false and malicious reviews about his business on Citysearch, alleging that the website will not remove the comments.

"For every good review I got, there would be two or three that followed that were bad," Dudley said.

When he noticed the pattern, he tried to contact the "unhappy" customers to see if he could fix their concerns, and claims he discovered most of the bad reviews were written anonymously by people who had never been to Angelic Healing Hands.

Dudley said he contacted Citysearch, requesting they either verify that the comments came from actual customers, or remove them. However, Citysearch responded with the following statement:

"We have determined that the user review you reported does not violate our terms of use, so it will remain published. The review is strongly worded, but nothing that is written is in violation of our terms."

The Citysearch terms of use are clearly stated on their website: "Content submitted to us will not: Be unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortious, indecent, defamatory, vulgar, profane, obscene, libelous, hateful or otherwise objectionable."

Dudley believes the comments made about his business violate those terms.

"Based on the names given in the profile on the reviews, none of them have ever been in any of our offices," Dudley said. "This vindictive ambush against Angelic Healing Hands' good name needs to stop.”

In a business where reputation is everything, online reviews can be valuable to local business owners.

Chachi, owner of Chachi Hair & Skin in Northwest Portland, has a perfect five star rating on Citysearch, but said he welcomes all reviews.

"If we don't get a negative review, we never know if we are doing anything wrong," said Chachi, who credits his perfect rating to his team's commitment to continuing education and constant training.

Dudley said he didn't create the Citysearch, so he cannot delete it.

When contacted by KOIN, Citysearch refused to comment on the issue.

Just look at the evidence: the spa's business has been steadily declining for several years, they recently had to close their office in the Sunset Athletic Club, they have a lot of trouble keeping the down-town office staffed (there are new therapists there every few months), the carpets don't look like they've been cleaned in over a year, and there is dog hair on the furniture. Is it really surprising that this place has gotten negative reviews? And Mr. Dudley's only evidence that these reviews are fake are that he claims that he hasn't had any customers with those names, as though anyone would post a negative review under their real name!

If people think its easy to go through the process of chasing the bad guy down and making a change, it isn't. I appreciate all the feed back I have recieved from both my business' clientele and KOIN 6 Kacey Montoya. It is people like this that helps to begin the healing from the pain others cause. Simply said, you cant always believe what you read go out and experience life yourself.

This isn't the only site that doesn't check to see if feedback or reviews are accurate. It is common practice for both Ebay and Amazon to take the customers word for it, regardless if its true or not. It is unfortunate, but I think the only way to stop this defamation of ones character or business name is to get an attorney involved. If information cannot be verified or proven true, then it should not be permitted.

The problem (and virtue) of the internet is that it allows anyone to post anything at anytime. It does not require good faith on the part of the users. It does not require honesty. You can do what you want. It can be difficult to track down who is responsible for falsehoods or any derogotory matter. And just because someone may be sued does not mean that it is worthwhile to do so. If they have no money why sue them? So people think that they cleverly get their revenge in and cause trouble for someone. Most of the time the will not be caught or held accountable. That is why web sites have to have some protocols in place to control what is posted to their accounts.

Can't believe what's posted on Angie List either. I see a really horrible contractor that gets rave reviews. Several people in our neighborhood used but we're scared to post anything bad, the guy is crazy. We all now better know but it costed us thousands, collectively. Appears his referral are friends or post via different email addresses. I think it's just up to the individual to do their own checking. It's a crap shoot.

This is why I love Yelp so much. I'm a business owner and have spent a lot of time getting my business (Portland Computerworks) listed on business listing sites. Of the 20 companies I've listed my business on, Citysearch is the most difficult to work with and has the worst customer service. Yelp uses a computer algorithm to keep honest reviews listed and they have to be by registered users who use the site frequently. I wonder how much longer sites like City search will be around for.

Times are changing. I predict some Attorneys will start specializing in malicious online defamation against small businesses. It is indeed sad that one or two people can set out with a few fake accounts and ruin someones reputation in a matter of a couple hours just by posting negative BS. It's been going on with Ebay for a couple years now...
