Since the story below first appeared, the buzz has only gotten louder over government agents seizing a batch of toy guns from a local business owner.

Click the link at right See ATF toy gun seizure: was it justified? for the updated story and exclusive interviews with Ben Martin and another local Airsoft specialist who went into some detail on why he believes the idea is preposterous: Jason Jonah is a merchandise receiver at Andy & Bax Surplus, a Portland Airsoft dealer.

CORNELIUS, Ore. - A local business owner is flabbergasted after a shipment of 30 toy guns for his store was confiscated by ATF agents in Tacoma.

Brad Martin and his son, Ben, sell the Airsoft BB guns from their store in Cornelius where they’ve been in business for seven years.

The Martins said they buy their stock from Taiwan because the merchandise is less expensive. But the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives seized a shipment of 30 in October. That shipment is worth around $12,000 and the ATF is promising to destroy the entire shipment.

Special Agent Kelvin Crenshaw said the toys can be easily retro-fitted into dangerous weapons.

"With minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun," Crenshaw said.

Brad Martin is furious about the loss of money, for sure, but also in what he now thinks as a loss of his time and the use of government agents to seize toy guns.

"All this manpower, all this time, all this taxpayer money, [it is] wasting my time and my profitability,” Martin said. “[Just] to seize 30 toy guns!"

Ben Martin disagrees that the toy guns could ever be considered dangerous.

"To say these are readily convertible to machine guns is absolutely preposterous,” he said. “The round wouldn't go into the firing chamber and even if the firing pin did strike the primer the gun would basically blow up in your face.”

ATF said it also seized the toys because they are missing the blaze orange tips required on all imported toy guns.

The Martins said they've received shipments before from Taiwan that were missing the orange tips and were simply asked by customs agents to drive up to Tacoma and paint the tips orange themselves. They are wondering why it is an issue now.

The ATF know if thay take all the guns out of the hand of the people then thay can go and do what thay want. If no one will stop them. How do you think Germany could kill 6,000,000 people with no one fighting back.(OH thay had NO guns to fight back with) Toy gun real gun thay want them all. Thay will get them. If we do not do somthing. I:E. vot them out. Oh and get rid of the ATF. its not 1925.

As a person that repairs airsoft toys I know it is not possible to convert them into real weapons. The design does not lend itself to conversion as there is no way the electric system could be changed to work with real rounds. The metal in an airsoft toy is of poor quality and even if real parts were installed in the airsoft M4 the whole thing would come apart in use. Paint the tips orange and call it a day!

This is for DynamiteAl. It would take max work to convert pelosi to prostitute. Who would pay-to-play with her. I think your heart is in the right place.

So under the "with minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun" theory, can I get the FBI to seize Nancy Pelosi because "with minimal work she could be converted to prostitute"? Can we get ATF to seize Barbara Boxer, because with the mere addition of a suicide bomber belt, she could be converted to a suicide bomber? I'm just askin'!

This is simply a means of expanding their authority. Like all bureaucracies, the ATF must grow or die. This is just another means of growing, moving into the real;m of Oppression Under Color of Authority. Nothing new for any government where the people have become sheep.

It is absolutely impossible to convert any, ANY Airsoft replica into a live firearm. Even if "PDX Gundealer" were correct about replacing the trigger mechanism of an Airsoft M4 with that of a real M4, you have to remember that possession of the components to install, replace, convert, repair, or retrofit Full-Auto Fire capability into ANY firearm is illegal without an ATF-approved permit, and is so prohibitively expensive (and time consuming) to obtain, an individual might as well purchase a legitimate Full-Auto Lower Receiver. But, for the sake of argument, let's assume you did. You bought an Airsoft M4, replaced the trigger group with Real Steel components (however you obtained them), and fitted a Real Steel Upper Receiver. Everything fits, and it looks like it would work. Problem: The bolt will not cycle. Airsoft rifles do not typically include a Buffer Spring within the buttstock, as there is no need. Airsoft mechanisms do not reciprocate in the same manner as Real Steel rifles. Even if you were able to chamber a round, somehow, only one of two possible outcomes will occur. #1: The rifle fires once, and only once. With nowhere for the bolt to travel, and nothing to send it back forward, the spent shell is not ejected, the hammer does not reset, and no new cartridge is loaded. You would have to open the rifle (if possible), manually eject the cartridge, and manually chamber a fresh round. No machine gun. At absolute best, a single shot M4 look-a-like. If it survived the first shot. Which brings us to the other possibility. #2: The rifle explodes in your face. Literally. While a Real Steel Upper is designed for the pressures created by firing, NO Airsoft Lower is designed for the same. As the bolt attempts to travel rearward, it splinters the stock, sending countless shards of shrapnel directly into your face. If you're lucky, you survive long enough to be prosecuted, or shot by police. Or, you die. All in the vain hope of building an illegal automa

I personally have bought AIRSOFT guns from the Martens. And as an AIRSOFT team owner i feel the ATF is full in the wrong they need to do their homework on AIRSOFT weapons and maybe stop wasting our tax dollars on petty toy guns and do their job by tracking down real crimanals!

Demand the ATF demonstrate how someone can turn the BB Gun into a lethal weapon. As far as this not being able to be done, thus the consequences being a problem with the firing and the gun going off in the persons face..........well, I guess that persons intent would be nipped in the bud right away, now wouldn't it!!

If you replace both the upper and lower you can have a real gun.. or in other words if you throw away the toy gun and replace it with a real gun then you can have a real gun! omg, this could be apply to everything I own!
