Players from a local 14-year-old baseball team who just won the Babe Ruth World Series in Virginia are still arriving back in Portland after being stuck on the East Coast for days due to Hurricane Irene.
The Hillsboro-based Mound Time Bandits, coached by owner, Greg Cero, won the series on Friday, Aug. 26.
While the team was in the Washington D.C. metro area they experienced more than just winning games.
During the fifth inning of their game on Tuesday, Aug. 23, the Bandits were startled by a 5.8 earthquake. The players stopped momentarily, but were instructed to play ball! They played the last out of the fifth while the ground was still shaking.
"It was a lot of thuds and we didn't know what it was," said second baseman and catcher, Andrew White.
Their run-ins with natural disasters was not over. Heavy thunderstorms started two days later, and then came Hurricane Irene.
"We were without power last night, that was interesting," said Cero.
14-year-old White said, "The earthquake and hurricane were pretty awesome, but winning it all was the best part."
