PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Mars Hill church’s newest location is on Southeast 32nd and Taylor, one of the most liberal neighborhoods in Portland. The Evangelical church is known for its conservative values and plans to bring its message to the community.

Pastor Mark Driscoll is one of the church's founders. He is quoted in a church video clip as stating: "Sex is for marriage and is for one man and one woman." According to reports, the pastor has equated homosexuality to cancer.

"I don't consider myself sexually immoral. I'm a gay man. I have a great partner. I have a family. I have a 6 year old child. I think we're a pretty awesome family, said David Pegor who lives across the street.

Pegor disagrees with the church's beliefs but says it's first amendment rights should not be violated.

"If they start knocking on my door and preaching to me about something I don't want to hear, then I'll have an issue with it."

Many residents are wondering why the church chose this location. Services start on September 10.

Where is all of the tolerance? Oh... Wait... Tolerance is used only as a One-Way-Street by the liberals and for their purposes only. What hypocritical bigots!

I facilitate many Portland-area atheist/Christian debates and discussions. I've been looking for more churches, seminaries, etc. that want to engage, and I've been having difficulty finding churches who want to participate. I hope this new church will want to engage the community. (If they want practice for their apologetics/evangelism programs, I can supply it to them ;-) ...Bernie http://www.meetup.com/Westside-Science-Religion-Discussion-Group/ http://www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Science-Religion-Discussion-Group/

Jesus never "defended" a prostitute to encourage her to keep doing what she was doing. The only two times we have specific conversations was in the gospel of John with the woman at the well, when he called her out for having 5 husbands, and living with the current one who she was not married to, then the woman "found" in adultery, where he defended her against the hypocrisy of the self-righteous religious leaders who didn't see their own sinfulness. But even in that case, he said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go now, and LEAVE your life of sin." Forgiveness with repentance. No touchy feely love that doesn't care what you do. God does love everyone, but he also demands a life-change in return. Militant homosexuals want one side of the coin, without the other. Doesn't work that way.

Sure CaptainK.... http://www.gotquestions.org/sex-before-marriage.html Question: "What does the Bible say about sex before marriage?" Answer: There is no Hebrew or Greek word used in the Bible that precisely refers to sex before marriage. The Bible undeniably condemns adultery and sexual immorality, but is sex before marriage considered sexually immoral? According to 1 Corinthians 7:2, “yes” is the clear answer: “But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.” In this verse, Paul states that marriage is the “cure” for sexual immorality. First Corinthians 7:2 is essentially saying that, because people cannot control themselves and so many are having immoral sex outside of marriage, people should get married. Then they can fulfill their passions in a moral way. Since 1 Corinthians 7:2 clearly includes sex before marriage in the definition of sexual immorality, all of the Bible verses that condemn sexual immorality as being sinful also condemn sex before marriage as sinful. Sex before marriage is included in the biblical definition of sexual immorality. There are numerous Scriptures that declare sex before marriage to be a sin (Acts 15:20; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:13, 18; 10:8; 2 Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; Jude 7). The Bible promotes complete abstinence before marriage. Sex between a husband and his wife is the only form of sexual relations of which God approves (Hebrews 13:4).

Could someone please point out the exact scripture that states se outside of marriage is considered a sin? If so, why did Jesus defend the prostitute?

"Mega" church ? Who coined that phrase? I guess WEEEEEEEE could call the Portland metro area a "MEGA" strip mall seeing how it looks like the place is jam packed with strip malls all the way from Kelso to Oregon city Hillsboro to Gresham. So I see "Mega" church fits right in with the wonder bread white flavor of the Portland Oregon Metro area. There is 2 'Mega" churches over here by me right next door to the Home Depot/Costco strip Mall. Have fun guys.
