If you’re stopped in traffic for longer than 20 seconds, Multnomah County says you should turn your engine off.

Wednesday, the county launched an anti-idling campaign called "Idling Gets You Nowhere."  Volunteers went car to car during a routine bridge lift, informing drivers of the benefits to turning your car off.

"Idling is right in the middle of two important Multnomah county priorities, one is public health because when vehicles are idling they emit a lot of pollution and the other is sustainability because when vehicles are idling they’re wasting fuel," said Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen.

The county is encouraging people to turn their cars off at bridge lifts, railroad crossings or at the airport.  The county is not encouraging people in traffic jams to turn their cars off.

"Basically what we’re trying to do is to explain to people that idling your vehicle is a really bad idea.  It wastes gas, it’s bad for the engine and it’s polluting the atmosphere," said Cogen.

An enormous banner on the Hawthorne Street Bridge reminds people to turn their cars off.

"I think it’s a great idea," said driver Andy Nguyen. "Holds true to us Oregonians trying to be more conservative and it’s better for the environment."

"I think it makes sense, it’s good the more we can keep the air clean, save gas and the environment is great," said Marie Von Walther, who was stopped at a bridge lift Wednesday.

Although the city maintains turning your car off is better on your car’s engine.  Several mechanics told KOIN Local 6 Wednesday that repeatedly turning your car on and off wears down its components.

#1 Let's use proper English to communicate our opinions, so people know what the hell you are talking about. #2 It's not turning off your car in stop-go traffic or heavy traffic on the highway; it's turning it off during bridge lifts, drive thrus, rail road crossings, waiting for your kid at school, etc. As jjcascade said, it's "Common sense advice for consumers and those who care about the quality of air we breathe!"

@gbudavid: LOL! Or, even better...wrap your mouth around your auto tailpipe and keep that engine running. A quicker way to extinction for all those who have given up on making peace with the planet. ;-)

My impression is that this is a campaign, not a law or regulation. It’s just a suggestion and an effort to inform the general public that idling does hurt your car and your wallet. You still have the choice of keeping your car idle. No one is FORCING people to turn off their cars. As far as the starter wear and tear goes….There have been studies showing that idling does in fact damage engine and exhaust components that cost far more than maintenance on a starter (roughly $10 annually). Those $10 will likely be recovered several times over in fuel savings and engine repairs from reduced idling (DEQ: http://www.deq.state.or.us/aq/factsheets/10nwr004.pdf, California Energy Commission: http://www.consumerenergycenter.org/myths/idling.html, Portland Bureau of Transportation: http://www.portlandonline.com/shared/cfm/image.cfm?id=131195, Oregon Toxics Alliance: http://www.oregontoxics.org/benzene/HAO_FactSheet_June09_FINAL.pdf).

I am just wondering when will they tell us when and how much air we can breathe? People had more freedom in communist eastern Europe than we have here right now. I know I lived there for a few years. Welcome to the United Communist State of Oregon. Where weirdos parasites have more rights than the few normal folk, yes?

This is so much horse-chyt! So you now hafta wear and tear your starter?? So you hafta waste even more fuel reigniting your engine?? REALLY?? How will this be enforced, by the way?? Nothing more than misguided priorities and Big-Brother taking away more and more liberties. Better hope that this does not become legislation -- despair for tha future, folks. DESPAIR.
