Volunteers with a Portland based non-profit organization--Living Yoga--is taking the practice to prison inmates.

Specially trained volunteers say yoga can be an excellent tool for self transformation. The goal is to develop the skills of mindfulness, impulse control and emotional regulation. Living Yoga also provides classes at drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, women's shelters and disadvantaged youth programs.

Living Yoga is currently holding its second annual Yogathon to raise awareness and funds for the program. Through June 10, yoga enthusiasts and people who have wanted to try yoga can raise pledges for committing to their own yoga practice.

The service Living Yoga is providing to the community is a very valuable opportunity for everyone who engages in the process. Simply because the term volunteer is used does not suggest that someone is getting something for nothing. These individuals give of their time and use their own personal resources to again share themselves with others who understand most circumstances may not get the awesome exposure to the healing power Yoga. Living Yoga is not just about helping the those individuals whose choices directed them to that place behind the physical walls of prison, but it's really most effective with helping people who live in their own mental and emotional prisons that so many people voluntarily put themselves, due to lack of information and personal awareness. Change and personal growth is great for all of us.

the transformative power of getting present to yourself and your life circumstances can not be understated. we would all benefit from this undertaking, certainly! every one of us contributes to our society in the way we live. for those who have fallen under the radar, who have been pushed to the margins, who have, by their own pain, caused pain to others, the need is even greater. i think of it like a ladder we're all climbing together - hoping to reach a greater sense of balance, empathy, and ultimately respect for all life, including ourselves. those on the bottom rungs need those of us with climbing skills to help out. that is what Living Yoga's volunteers are doing. and, for every volunteer i know, they report back that their own lives are also remarkably transformed through this service. no one was born as a "dreg to society." no one. we are, each one of us, a part of the whole. and i personally believe it is our responsibility and our honor to help each other. -sarahjoy marsh, founder of Living Yoga

well lets say cool at least some one needs to teach these dregs of society to regulate something! maybe if people have a little empathy the world would more better. i mean dam do we really have to bag everyone for everything? yoga is a good thing. and if one of them changes awesome!!!!!!!!! one less victim!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think that anyone watching this story would say, "Awesome, I'm going to break the law now to get free yoga in jail." This service is provided for free by a non-profit whose aim is to better our community through yoga. Yoga is helping many prisoners come out and not make the same mistakes again.

Great, another freebie for folks that break the law. The rest of us have to pay for them and ourselves.
