A man in a Southwest Portland home called 9-1-1 for assistance Monday evening--only the caller was an intruder caught showering as the actual owner arrived home.

According to Portland Police, a trespassing suspect entered a home at the 2700 block of Southwest Rutland Terrace and at some point decided to take a shower in the bathroom.

When the homeowner arrived and confronted the trespasser with his two German Shepherds, the suspect locked the door and called 9-1-1 for help at about 7 p.m.

The suspect said he feared the homeowner might have a gun.

The homeowner also called 9-1-1.

Police responded with their own K-9 unit and took 24-year-old Timothy James Chapek into custody on a criminal trespassing charge.

the man should've suffered lead poisoning. its a common ailment when you break into a house down here in nm. and caleb, if you are not going to be your brother's keeper, then the public has the right to deal with him in the way they choose as situations merit.

Tell you what reality and earthmommy this man was just arrested for another burglary not 24 hours after being released from jail. I propose one of you 2 take him in and keep his punk butt off the streets since your so soft on him. Maybe your compassion will melt his heart and he will change his toon, or you can join the rest of society and realize that coodling him solves nothing.

Caleb, I too recently went through an experience where a close family member of mine was thrown into jail, for some bazaar criminal offenses. The news splashed his photo and story all over the 6 o'clock news. The comments were horrible and in their eyes just. In the past I would have been on the same side as them, but as is with most things when the shoes on the other foot you find yourself in a position of learning, not everything is black and white. Everyone has a story and knowing their story, makes what they did, more human and not just some criminal. Good luck to you and your family, this will pass quickly and although some people comments are hurtful some day they may learn what you and I have. Kristina

Caleb, you are well spoken and understand more about mental illness than most people. Has your brother taken meds for Bipolar Disorder. He is at the age when it gets bad. If he is drinking or drugging to feel better, that does not help! Can he use your adress or your parent's address to get some help? This boy could have a good life with some proper meds, some support, and trust in God. Good Luck to you and Your Family. Laura

I'm sorry Caleb but why exaclty are we suppose to not judge a man who breaks into a home? I must be the worst person in the world for doing that? As is also common in todays practices we get the family comming in to shame us when another family members breaks yet another law in a long list of others. Sorry dude not feeling one bit sorry for the publicity your brother brough upon his self. Breaking into somones home if one of the worse, most personal violating acts someone an inflict on another. REGARDELSS OF THE EXCUSE THE FAMILY WANTS TO MAKE FOR HIM. That excuse don't work if he breaks in a home, steals, or kills someone/himself which is where he is headed. I'm going to give you the same advise I always do when family feels they need to come play PR on the opinion forums, DONT. Your going to hurt your brothers legal defense by making family statements that will come to bite you in the rear. You dont like what others have to say about your brother? Better get used to it, it sounds like there will be more to come.

The home owner seems to find the whole incident quite funny as she laughs through out the 911 call. There is total lack of good judgment wanting to reenter the house with the man still inside.

To all who are quick to throw stones, My name is Caleb Chapek, and I'm Timothy's younger brother. As is somewhat common in today's news practices, Koin didn't get all the facts before deciding to report on this story. Yes, what Tim did today was very unusual. Yes, Tim does have an extensive criminal history. And YES, (the unreported part), Tim does have some serious mental health issues. The last time I talked to him for an extended length of time, he smelled as if he hadn't showered recently, looked as if he hadn't been eating much, and had been homeless for a substantial amount of time. Before his last stretch in jail, his house-mates called the police as he had been talking to himself. He recently had a phone conversation with my other brother and my father in which he revealed that he thought both my father and my brother, (an Iraqi war vet, and green beret), were dead. There are also parts of Tim's childhood which would be overwhelmingly difficult for anyone to deal with, mental illness or no mental illness. I am really dishearted that a situation which could have been used to bring him help was turned into one in which people are mocking him, (some on this page even wishing he'd been shot). He recently went to a hospital to try and receive help, but being that he was homeless and has no permanent address, the hospital was unable to render services. I, and my family would greatly appreciate your prayers for Tim during this time. Thank you, and God bless.
