It was a captivating afternoon as viewers and commuters watched as little Mango got loose on I-84 west Monday, darting in and out of traffic and prompting a slow down and frantic effort to corral the little Pomeranian.

“She slipped the car,” said owner Dan Dowdy. “She got out because of me.”

Dowdy said the animal is a companion dog for his wife.

“We need to find her.”

And find her they did, just after 5:30 p.m. as KOIN Local 6 photographer Matt Rashleigh, who was with Dowdy, when the dog returned to the safety of Dowdy and his wife, Lindy.

I live in Orlando,FL and they showed this clip in the 11:00 PM newscast tonight. I was on pins and needles watching him almost get hit several times. To those of you bashing the owners....I have dogs and I can tell you that we all make mistakes and dogs can move very fast. This event does not prove that they are irresponsible pet owners. Give them a break on this one.

I think it's a refreshing story with all the negativity in the country right now! And, I know I'd be REALLY grateful to all the people who tried to help capture Mango on the freeway if it were my dog! Wow, restores my faith in human kindess and decency--people even throwing their whole bodies onto the pavement trying to throw a coat over him and capture him!! Now that's dedication. Bravo to you selfless commuters!

I can't understand why there is all this coverage about a dog running loose on I-84 when, at 4:30 yesterday afternoon, a man took his life by jumping off the I-84 12th street overpass. (http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/09/two_eastbound_lanes_of_i-84_cl.html)

You know just ignore the people that have nothing nice to say. My world it's not really the end of the world that it took you a little longer to get home. Seriously,Did you really have anything that important to be doing? Obviously not since you are here whining about this. I'm glad you go your dog back. They are very important members of the family. Accidents do happen, thank God this one had a happy ending. Certainly shows there are great people left in the world. What a touching story.

Whew!! I was watching the news and saw the whole thing. Thanks to all those who stopped on a busy day in traffic. I am very happy at the way the dog was safely returned. Might I suggest a harness for the dog.( not trying to be mean, just helpful) Sometimes they work better than the collars with the leash. This is from past experience with small dogs. But I am really glad the dog is safe...
