A well-known Portland grocery store owner is dead after a crash involving a suspected drunk driver.

John Zupan, 66, was hurt in a crash Monday night but died late Tuesday night from his injuries. Zupan was riding a motorcycle on Marine Drive near 138th Ave. in Northeast Portland when a car crossed the center line and hit him.

Zupan was in critical condition until just after 10 p.m. Tuesday when he died.

The man accused of causing the accident made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Multnomah County.

Edy Reynoso-Ramirez is facing drunk driving and assault charges.

According to investigators, Reynoso-Ramirez was speeding when the crash happened. He tried to run away from the scene, said investigators.

Reynoso-Ramirez is in the country illegally and is now on an immigration hold.

At the age of 16, Zupan began work as a courtesy clerk, then as a produce manager and then district manager at local grocery store.

In 1975, Zupan decided to venture out on his own opening the first Zupan's.

Zupan's is still family-owned; John's son, Mike, took over in early 2000 and until Monday's crash John continued to take an active role at the stores he started.

No funeral plans or memorial services have been scheduled yet.

caveman at 8/31/2011 8:37 PM you said "some you people need to get your facts straight. it's not the feds fault that oregon is over run by illegals. this moronic state has a STATE law that says no state money can be used to track, prosecute, or deport illegals. police officers in oregon can't even inquire about there immigration status unless they are believed to be involved in drugs." But you are wrong ORS 181.850 Enforcement of federal immigration laws. You are fallowing lock step with the libs. read this. "(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1) of this section, a law enforcement agency may exchange information with the United States Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and the United States Bureau of Customs and Border Protection in order to (a) Verify the immigration status of a person if the person is arrested for any criminal offense; or (b) Request criminal investigation information with reference to persons named in records of the United States Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services or the United States Bureau of Customs and Border Protection." so it sound like the local police CAN ask and RUN every one they ARREST but they don't because they refuse to read the rest of the ORS 181.850. If you think I made this up look it up your self here. It's down near the bottom of the page http://www.leg.state.or.us/ors/181.html

Resources for the military and the police are 2 seperate issues all together Musulman, long time no see. Nice to see you pop by with your pro Muslim message again. Been a long time since you insulted everyone who lives in Happy Valley and East Portland.

perhaps if the govt would spend more resources on illegal immigration, rather than the so-called (useless)war on terror, this poor man would be alive to enjoy the fruits of his hard labor. Im sorry for your loss Zupan family.

I think what everybody is forgetting is that John Zupan was a wonderful man. A great family man with a huge heart. His smile was infectious. I feel lucky to have known him. This is a tragedy. Drunk driving is a huge problem, and Marine Drive is a huge problem. May be rest in peace.

Actually, it DOES matter that he was illegal. Because if he wasn't here, then this man would be alive today. As it is, we have our own drunk losers killing innocent people. So when someone who isn't even suppose to be here does it, that's especially frustrating. This idiot even tried to flee the scene, disgusting, send him back to Mexico and take away his license for life.

ACTUALLY WE SHOULD CARE THAT HE IS AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT. PRECISELY BECAUSE WE HAVE OUR OWN DRUNKEN IDIOTS WHO KILL PEOPLE, WE SURE AS HELL DON'T NEED ANYMORE VICTIMS. HAD HE NOT BEEN HERE ILEGALLY, THIS MAN WOULD BE ALIVE TODAY.
